Can cats or dogs eat pistachios?

We’ve all heard about the benefits of adding nuts to our diets, seen the trends of pistachio butters or the hype of Dubai’s pistachio chocolate. As pistachios increasingly enter our modern diets, have you ever thought of offering your pet one to enjoy? Dr Corinne elaborates as to whether pets can eat pistachios, and if they can, what is the safest way to feed them. Can dogs eat pistachios? Yes, dogs can eat pistachios; they're non-toxic to dogs. Interestingly, the pistachio nuts are actually a seed from the Pastacio Vera tree and are a nutrient dense food type. There are number of health benefits including: When feeding nuts, we need to be careful, as there is a small risk of choking or rarely gastrointestinal blockages from consuming large amounts at one sitting. Store brought pistachios usually contain added salt which cause gastrointestinal irritation, We should also consider that the naturally high fat content in pistachios can give some dogs stomach upset if eaten in larger amounts, so moderation is key. If you are going to add pistachios to your dog's diet it's best to do so as a treat. Treats must be no more than 10% of the daily calorific consumption. You can use this table below to determine how many pistachios to offer to your dog: When feeding pistachios, give unsalted and remove the shells entirely. You can crush or sprinkle them over a meal to add extra flavor and texture, and decrease the risk of any unwanted side effects such as constipation from eating large amounts of pistachio shells. Can dogs eat pistachio shells? No, it is not recommended to feed your dog pistachio shells. While not toxic the shells are small, sharp and abrasive. This can risk intestinal injuries, blockage and rarely choking hazards, especially in the smaller breeds. Can dogs eat pistachio ice cream? Sadly, no dogs cannot enjoy a lick of our pistachio ice cream. The ice cream is very high in sugar and fat which is likely to cause gastrointestinal upset, and symptoms such as diarrhoea or bloating. Some pistachio ice creams may have added extras which are toxic to dogs such as xylitol or chocolate. Can dogs eat pistachio butter? Pistachio butter is not toxic to dogs, however it generally should be avoided as it is extremely high in fats and salts and if the pistachio butter is sweetened it may contain Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is toxic for dogs. Can dogs eat pistachio cream? No dogs cannot eat pistachio cream. It is high in fats and may have sweeteners such as Xylitol - a toxic compound to dogs. If your dog consumes too many high fat foods, they may suffer issues such as pancreatitis and obesity. The dairy portion of pistachio cream is likely to affect any dogs that are particularly sensitive to lactose. Can dogs eat roasted pistachios? Yes, dogs can eat plain unsalted and roasted pistachios in small amounts. Ensure to de-shell them to avoid choking hazards and try crushing them and sprinkling them over your dog's meals for extra enjoyment. Can dogs eat salted pistachios? You should avoid giving salted pistachios to your dog due to the salt content, which can adversely affect your dogs health in the long term. Instead stick to unsalted, unshelled and crushed pistachios to maximise safety when feeding pistachios. Can dogs eat pistachio pudding? No, you should not feed pistachio pudding to your dog. While pistachios are not toxic to dogs, pistachio pudding is high in fat, sugar and dairy which may cause digestive upset in your dog. So we have discovered dogs can eat pistachios, in certain situations, and feeding plain is the best way to do so. Now let's find out if the same risks are present in cats. Can cats eat pistachios? While pistachios are not toxic to cats, there are other safer alternatives to feed instead. Cats are smaller than dogs, which means the risks we mentioned earlier such as choking, gastrointestinal upsets, injuries or even obstructions are higher. Ask your vet for suitable alternatives if you would like safer human foods to feed. Can cats eat pistachio shells? No, you shouldn’t feed pistachio shells to your cat. The hard abrasiveness of the shell makes it a choking hazard, and if eaten its hard surface can cause microdamage to the stomach and intestinal walls. Can cats eat salted pistachios? Cats should avoid anything with extra salt, salted pistachios included. The added salt is bitter to cats and they may vomit shortly after eating salted pistachios. Can cats eat pistachio ice cream? No, pistachio ice cream is rich in dairy and sugar, both of which will lead to intestinal upset. Symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and bloating are seen when cats enjoy icecream even in small amounts. Can cats eat pistachio butter or pistachio cream? Pistachio butter or pistachio cream cannot be fed to cats, as the dairy component of the butter is high in fat. The combination of most cats being lactose intolerant and high fat volumes, leads to inflammation in the intestines and subsequent illness. Can cats eat roasted pistachios? Yes, in small amounts. Feed the roasted pistachios plain, no more than 1-2 at a time, and crush or grind into small pieces before feeding. Can cats eat pistachio paste? Pistachio paste contains added fats, so is not suitable for cats to eat. Can cats eat pistachio pudding? Pistachio pudding will contain fats, milk, sweeteners and maybe chocolate. All of these added ingredients can make your cat unwell, and in high enough amounts can even be toxic. Pistachio pudding should not be fed to cats. Summary We have learnt that yes, in some situations cats and dogs can enjoy sharing your pistachio snacks. The key to feeding safely is to feed small amounts of pistachio that are plain, unsalted and de-shelled. To improve palatability, grinding or crushing is an extra step you can take when preparing pistachios for your pets.
