Getting to know German shepherds

German shepherds originated in (you guessed it) Germany, where they were bred to herd and protect sheep. Today, these versatile canines serve as police dogs, search-and-rescue heroes, and beloved family pets.

Why should you get dog insurance for your German shepherd?

Dog insurance can help you pursue the vet care your shepherd needs, even when it costs a leg and a paw.

Accidents and Illness Costs

From hereditary illnesses to sudden injuries, shepherds can have it ruff. Dog insurance eases your financial burden, which helps your pup access the vet care they need when they need it.

Emergency Care

Emergency treatment can cost thousands of dollars. Dog insurance helps you seek out all the treatment your shepherd needs without letting your finances hold you back.

Hereditary Conditions

German shepherds are prone to hereditary conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia. Insurance can help cover treatment-related costs, even for hereditary conditions*.

Peace of Mind

From accidents to illnesses, pet insurance helps you focus on your shepherd's health — not just your bank account.

Common German shepherd health conditions

German Shepherd

Hip dysplasia

  • ManyPets Average Claim Received: >$520

  • ManyPets Highest Claim Received: >$9,800

This is a common genetic condition in which the hip joint doesn't develop properly. It can lead to discomfort, pain, limping, and arthritis over time.

Please note that these are general health concerns for German shepherds, and individual dogs may or may not experience these issues. Regular veterinary care, a balanced diet, proper exercise, and attention to breed-specific needs may help mitigate some of these health problems.

Frequently asked questions

Everything else you may want to know about ManyPets claims for German shepherds.

How much does German shepherd insurance cost?

The cost of dog insurance depends on multiple factors, including your dog’s age and location, your coverage selections, and breed. German shepherds are prone to certain hereditary health conditions, which may play a role in determining your premium.

Does ManyPets cover pre-existing conditions for my German shepherd?

Like other pet insurance companies, ManyPets won’t cover pre-existing conditions for any type of pet. However, we may treat past conditions that have been free of symptoms and treatment for 18 months (except for cruciate ligament injuries or hip dysplasia).

Does dog insurance for German shepherds cover routine care?

The ManyPets dog insurance policy is designed to reimburse pet parents for accidents and illnesses, not preventative care. However, the optional, non-insurance ManyPets Wellness Plan can indeed reimburse you for preventative care, including checkups, vaccinations, parasite prevention, routine dental care, supplements, and more*.

Does dog insurance for German shepherds cover liability, loss, or theft?

The ManyPets insurance policy is intended to cover accidents and illnesses, but not liability, loss, or theft.

Does dog insurance cover travel for German shepherds?

All ManyPets policies cover dogs who are traveling in any US state, Washington D.C., or Canada for up to 90 days. After 90 days, you’ll need to update your pet’s address.

Does dog insurance cover dental treatment for German shepherds?

Your dog insurance policy may cover dental accidents and, unlike some pet insurance companies, dental illnesses. Insurance doesn’t cover preventative cleanings or over-the-counter dental products — but the optional, non-insurance ManyPets Wellness Plan does help reimburse you for these types of preventative care.

How do I make an insurance claim for my German Shepherd?

It’s easy! Just follow these three (3) simple steps:

Step 1: When your pet is sick or injured, visit any licensed veterinarian in the U.S. for diagnosis and treatment, and pay as usual at checkout (don’t forget to ask for a copy of your itemized vet bill).

Step 2: Log in to your account at https://manypets.com/account and press the “Make a Claim” button. Enter the details of your claim, upload a copy of your vet bill, and press submit!

Step 3: Sit back and relax while we process your claim. We’ll send you regular updates via email so that you can track our progress. If approved, we’ll pay you back for everything we cover up to your reimbursement percentage and after you’ve met your yearly deductible*. If you need to contact someone from our team, please email manyclaim@manypets.com.

*ManyPets analyzes every claim on its own merits, subject to the terms and conditions of your insurance policy or Wellness Plan. Insurance exclusions apply, including those for pre-existing conditions (only claims unrelated to an excluded treatment or condition are eligible for coverage). Wellness Plan reimbursement is available only for eligible preventative care treatments.
