Forbes' #1 Pet Insurance Company for 2023

How ManyPets pet insurance is different from pet travel insurance

ManyPets offers tremendous insurance for pet travel, but we don’t technically offer pet travel insurance. So what does that mean, exactly?

ManyPets offers pet insurance for accidents and illnesses that remains active while you’re traveling within the 50 US states, Washington, D.C., or Canada for up to 90 days.

Pet travel insurance policies, which are not commonly sold in the US, are designed to cover the risks associated with transporting or traveling with your pet. There’s no such thing as pet travel insurance that covers pet illness and injury if it’s not directly related to the fact that you’re traveling.

The ManyPets pet insurance policy may cover your pet for accidents and illnesses that just so happen to occur while your dog or cat is traveling, even if those conditions are not the direct result of travel-related mishaps.

Why ManyPets pet insurance for traveling with your dogs or cats?

ManyPets offers nose-to-tail pet insurance coverage** for accidents and illnesses at competitive prices with no hidden fees. And your coverage won’t suffer just because you’ve whisked your whiskered or wet-nosed friends across state lines or visited our neighbor to the north. And wherever your pet is covered, ManyPets won’t place annual caps on reimbursement for approved claims.

How pet insurance claims work when you’re traveling

The process of submitting your claim remains the same whether your pet gets a tummy ache at home, slips on the ice during your Alaskan ski trip, or loses a fight to a feisty Montreal squirrel during your long-planned poutine sampling tour. Here’s how it works:

What does pet insurance cover when you’re traveling?

ManyPets pet insurance covers accidents and illnesses. Covered treatments remain the same (for up to 90 days) across the US and Canada — even if your pet requires hospitalization or other extended treatment. Here are some of the many things ManyPets will reimburse you for…

What does pet insurance NOT cover while traveling?

Unless you’re traveling outside the US or Canada, or you’ve been traveling for more than 90 days, coverage exclusions remain the same across all locations. We don’t cover:

Vet care outside the US or Canada

ManyPets pet insurance may cover your pet within any of the 50 US states — or Canada — for up to 90 days. But your pet will not be covered for any vet care outside the US or Canada, so keep that in mind while traveling abroad.

Pre-existing conditions

These are conditions for which your pet was symptomatic, treated, or diagnosed before your pet insurance policy went into effect or during your waiting period. However, unlike some other companies, ManyPets will no longer consider most conditions to be pre-existing if your pet has been free of symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for a certain time period — usually 18 months.***

Preventative care

The ManyPets Accident and Illness Policy does not cover routine or preventative care like checkups, dental cleanings, preventative parasite treatments, or supplements. However, the optional ManyPets’ Wellness Plan (a non-insurance plan you may purchase in addition to insurance) is designed to reimburse you for such items. This is particularly important for kittens, who need lots of vaccinations and checkups.

Waiting periods

This is the brief period, beginning the day your insurance policy becomes effective, when your pet's accidents and illnesses are not yet eligible for coverage. Waiting periods may vary by state due to relevant regulatory rules and changes; always refer to your own state’s policy wording.

Finding the best pet insurance while traveling

ManyPets offers coverage for dogs and cats, including puppies and kittens, adult dogs and cats, and senior dogs and cats, even if you’re traveling in another state or in Canada. Unlike some other providers, ManyPets policies may cover claims related to accident/illness exams and periodontal disease, and we don’t place annual limits on payouts for approved claim.

Pet insurance and travel FAQs

Everything else you may want to know about ManyPets insurance and travel

Does my dog or cat require “pet travel insurance” to receive coverage while traveling within the US or Canada?

Nope! The ManyPets’ Accident and Illness policy covers your pet while you’re traveling within the US or Canada — and also, of course when you’re in your home state. “Pet travel insurance,” which isn’t commonly offered in the US, is solely designed to cover pets for mishaps that are directly associated with traveling.

Does ManyPets pet insurance cover international travel?

When it comes to travel outside of the US, ManyPets pet insurance covers eligible claims for treatment that takes place in Canada (for up to 90 days). However, it does not cover vet care that takes place outside of the US or Canada.

What are the risks of traveling with a pet?

Travel can always create risks for your pet, whether you’re driving, flying, or taking the train. Stick to safe practices, like keeping your pet out of your car’s front seat or — when permitted — letting them ride with you in an airplane cabin. If traveling does directly result in any injuries or illnesses, your pet may be reimbursed for treatment if there are no pre-existing conditions or other exclusions preventing coverage.

Can my pet be covered even if treatment takes place in more than one state?

Yes!

Let’s say you’re on vacation when your car-chasing Chihuahua finds their way into Honolulu’s sunniest emergency clinic. If your furry friend’s recovery regimen ultimately continues under the watchful eye of your vet in Milwaukee, this travel and this use of two vets won’t affect your coverage one way or another. If treatment is eligible for coverage, it will remain eligible across locations.

For how long can I live with my pet in a new location before I have to report a permanent change of residence?

If you know ahead of time that you and your pet will be moving to a new location for more than 90 days, you should report that move right away; ManyPets will consider the move to be permanent after 90 days away. At that point, you’ll only be able to receive coverage in the new location if you’ve updated your address. You can do so by calling our customer support team at 1-888-978-5291 (Mon-Fri: 9am-9pm EST, or Sat: 10am-6pm EST).

What if my pet needs vet care while I’M traveling but they’re still at home?

If you’re away from home and your pet is under the care of a kennel or sitter, you can still submit a claim for veterinary care — even if you’re not the one who took them to the vet. You can then put the money from any approved claims toward reimbursing the individual or organization that initially paid for your pet’s veterinary care.

*When traveling away from home, ManyPets pet insurance may still cover your pet for up to 90 days if they receive treatment within the 50 US states, Washington, D.C., or Canada. After 90 days, you’re required to update your permanent address in order to maintain coverage in a new location.

**ManyPets analyzes every claim on its own merits, subject to the terms and conditions of your policy. Exclusions apply, including those for pre-existing conditions. Only claims unrelated to an excluded treatment or condition are eligible for coverage.

***Waiting periods and duration before cured conditions cease to be considered pre-existing may vary by state due to relevant regulatory rules and changes; always refer to your own state’s policy wording.
