Becoming a pet parent to a cat is an exciting time, and all pet parents remember how special those first few weeks learning the ropes were.

Being a first-time owner brings with it fresh challenges and anxieties, too. We’re sure you’ll do fine no matter the cat you pick. But if you’re looking for a gentler time, then considering your cat’s breed is a good first step.

Here, we list cats known for their affection and easy-going nature, as well as the qualities you could look for as a first-time pet parent to make things a little easier.

Here, we list the "best" cat breeds for first-time owners to give you a general idea of where to start.

What to look for in a cat as a first-time owner

Some qualities to look for in a cat if you’ve never owned one before include:

  • Adaptable, friendly and relaxed temperament

  • Friendliness with children or other pets

  • Low to moderate grooming requirements

But really, picking the pet you’ll parent really comes down to their personality. How many of us have picked a pet because they just “felt right”?

So, while it’s important to do your research, it’s generally better to follow your gut and pick a pet based on their personality (as long as you have the means to look after them).

We’ve listed eight of the best cat breeds for first-time pet parents below if you want some ideas, though!

The eight best cat breeds for first-time pet parents

Ragdoll

A serene Ragdoll cat with a luxurious cream and beige coat, vivid blue eyes, and a lush tail sitting to the side, is gazing directly forward with a soft expression, positioned against a white background.

Known for going “limp” when held, Ragdolls are exceptionally affectionate and gentle cats that love nothing more than cuddles and relaxing.

They’re ideal for first-time pet parents since they’re relatively low-maintenance (they’ll still need regular brushing as a long-haired breed), and their affection for their person is evident all the time.

They’re known for being friendly, gentle, easy to train and easier to socialise. If you want a cuddly companion that’ll not cause too much fuss, then a Ragdoll is a good pick.

British Shorthair

British Shorthair

Calm, quiet, dignified and oh-so cuddly, the popular British Shorthair is a great pick for first-time pet parents. They have low grooming needs and excel in relaxed, mellow households, and are known for being affectionate with their owners.

These easygoing kitties are capable of being relatively independent, meaning they won’t need constant fuss or supervision. They have the ideal mix of loyalty, adaptability and manageable care needs that makes the British Shorthair a strong choice for first-time pet parents.

American Shorthair

Independent, social and lovers of some quality cuddle and face-to-face time, American Shorthairs are popular across the world with families and singles alike. This adaptable breed love to play, and they’re known for their easygoing nature.

Like any cat, you’ll still need to groom and brush them regularly, and some American Shorthairs are prone to shedding. But for everything else, they’re an easy breed to get along with.

If you want an affectionate breed that isn’t afraid to show their personality, you can’t go wrong with an American Shorthair.

Siamese

Siamese

Siamese cats are intelligent, vocal kitties that need stimulation and interaction, but if you’re home often, they’re a good choice for first-time pet parents.

Their intelligent, social nature means they form bonds quickly and they adapt well to training. Despite their cool exterior, they’re warm, affectionate kitties that love to meow. One thing to make clear: they’re not low-maintenance cats, they need a lot of face-to-face time.

If you want a playful, energetic cat, and you’re home often to keep them socialised and entertained, then a Siamese cat is a good choice.

Maine Coon

A majestic Maine Coon cat with a regal gaze, sporting striking tabby patterns and a lush white bib, sits confidently. Its sharp tufted ears and the soft, cascading fluff of its fur contrast with the light background.

These big, friendly giants may take up more room than other cats, but they’re super easy to parent. They’ll need a fair amount of stimulation, but in general, they’re known for being friendly, playful and easygoing.

Maine Coon cats are known for being quite vocal and affectionate, too, which is always nice when you’re a new pet parent.

They aren’t low-maintenance as that long, lustrous coat needs some grooming, but in general, they’re a healthy, gentle breed that first-time pet parents can do well with.

Scottish Fold

Scottish Folds are sweet-natured, friendly cats who are a top choice for first-time pet parents. They’re generally easygoing, and their affectionate temperament makes them popular around the world. They’re adaptable cats who are relatively low maintenance, and they’re calm, quiet kitties.

One thing to note, however, is that Scottish Folds need socialisation and face-to-face time, so if you’re out of the house a lot, they may not be suitable.

If you want a sweet cat with a mellow, affectionate attitude as a first-time pet parent, then a Scottish Fold is the one.

Birman

Birman cats have a long history of living with humans, which has made them sociable and even-tempered when it comes to dealing with us.

They’re gentle, affectionate cats who are adaptable to various environments and people, and their intelligence keeps us on our toes. They’re a good fit for various households and lifestyles, too.

They have moderate grooming needs, and they love being around us humans, making them a real joy to parent, even as a first-time pet parent.

Exotic Shorthair

Exotic Shorthairs are very similar to the popular Persian cats, but are easier to maintain and parent. They’re calm, loving cats who are perfect for flats and small homes.

They have a low-maintenance personality, and are known for being laidback and affectionate. While being gentle, they love to play, and they tend to meow, purr and vocalise to communicate.

If they sound like a good fit your lifestyle, then an Exotic Shorthair is a smart choice for first-time pet parents.
