Why names are important (but also why you shouldn't stress about it)

Names are important. They shape identities, reflect personalities and, in some cases, tell a story. They also deepen the connection we have with our pets. It’s understandable, then, that naming our pets can become daunting.

But despite us saying it’s important, don’t worry - your pet’s name is personal to you and your cat, and you can’t choose wrong; your cat’s love for you doesn’t depend on their name, and you know them best. Just pick one that feels right to you, and we promise it’ll fit.

As we said, names are important. But the bond you have with your cat overrides that.

Cat-naming tips for new pet parents

If you’re stuck finding a name for your kitten or cat, here are some common tips to find one that feels right:

Involve family and friends

When struggling, ask friends or family what they think your cat should be called. They can come up with some good (and not so good) options.

Try the sound test

Say a few of your name options out loud and see which one feels the best to say. Sometimes, a name can sound not quite right in our head, but when we say it out loud, it fits.

Wait for their personality to emerge

It’s difficult to choose a name in the early days, as we’re not quite sure what our cat’s personality is like. It’s totally fine to wait a few days and see what type of cat you have, and afterwards, finding the right one should happen pretty easily.

When in doubt, keep it simple

If you really can’t find one, try to keep things simple. Names that are one or two syllables and don’t sound like common commands can work best.

Preparing for a life with your new kitten or cat

Whatever name you pick, have confidence that it's the right one for your kitten or cat. We're sure you've chosen something that makes them them.

Getting a new cat or kitten is exciting, but it’s hard at times, isn’t it? Thankfully, we're here to help. We've covered what to do to prepare for a new kitten, the importance of routine vet care, and even how to work from home with one.

A part of that is finding good kitten insurance, which can help you and your kitten prepare for the unexpected, so you can spend more time doing the stuff that really matters.
