Do I need pet travel cover?

If you can’t leave your pet behind when you go on holiday, or simply prefer having your furry friend with you, pet travel cover is a must.

Pet holiday cover isn’t usually a legal requirement, but if your dog or cat falls ill in a foreign country, having financial support in place is a huge comfort.

Insurers don’t typically offer standalone pet travel cover. Our customers get EU travel cover when going abroad on all our plans. We also offer worldwide cover on our Complete Care plan. Limits apply

What do I need to know before travelling with my pet?

Planning to travel with your pet? You’ll need to plan ahead, and understand the relevant rules and regulations. You’ll also need to obtain official documents, such as a pet passport or animal health certificate, and think about risks to your pet’s welfare.

Important things to consider include:

  • Your pet’s travel documentation. You’ll need an animal health certificate, and evidence that your pet has been microchipped, vaccinated against rabies, and had treatment for tapeworm and ticks.

  • The time it will take to get to your destination. Flying might be faster, but some pets become anxious on planes.

  • Whether pets are allowed to travel with you. Some cruise lines, for example, do not allow pets to join guests onboard.

  • Vaccination and quarantine requirements.

  • The climate and weather at your destination. Your pet may not cope well in hot or humid environments.

Pet travel cover FAQs

Everything else you need to know about your pet travel insurance cover.

What are the risks of travelling with a pet?

Travel can be risky for pets. In addition to exposure to illnesses and diseases, they may get hurt or lost in unfamiliar environments. Similarly, foreign countries may have rules about bringing pets across borders which may disrupt your travel plans. If you encounter difficulties with your pet while travelling, you may end up having to pay expensive vet bills and other unexpected costs.

What affects the cost of my pet insurance?

The cost of cover for pets will vary by insurer, but will depend on factors including your pet’s age, size, breed, and medical history. The best way to find out the cost of pet insurance is to get a quote - it only takes a few minutes.

Will my pet insurance be valid abroad?

You must check the terms and conditions of your plan and your handbook before travelling with your pet.

Do I need a pet passport?

Following Brexit, pet passports issued in Great Britain are no longer valid. Pet passports issued in an EU country, or in Northern Ireland, are still valid.

The animal health certificate has replaced the pet passport for animals travelling from the UK.

How can I travel to Europe with my pet post-Brexit?

To travel to Europe with your pet, you’ll need to obtain an animal health certificate in the 10 days before you enter the EU. You can obtain an animal health certificate from a vet, but will need to show proof that your pet has been microchipped and show evidence of its vaccination history.
