Don't worry - you can still switch if your pet has a pre-existing condition

If your pet’s been ill in the past and you then switch insurers, the new insurer will usually consider it a pre-existing condition. This generally means it won’t be covered. But that doesn’t mean you can’t switch.

At ManyPets, we do things a bit differently. If your pet’s condition ended two or more years ago, we’ll cover it as a new condition if it crops up again. We've also designed a dedicated Pre-existing policy, which covers your pet's condition if it hasn't had signs, symptoms, treatment, medication or advice for three months.

Always check the policy handbook and IPID before you purchase.

Our pre-existing condition cover options

OPTION ONE

Choose our Pre-existing cover for a benefit of up to £1,500 as part of a £7,000 vet fee limit to cover conditions that haven't had signs, symptoms, treatment, medication or advice for three months. Terms apply.

OPTION TWO

Pick one of our standard pet insurance policies for conditions that haven't had signs, symptoms, treatment, medication or advice for two years. You'll get up to the vet fee limit you've chosen. Terms apply.

A few things to note if your pet has a pre-existing condition

Our dedicated Pre-existing policy has limitsMake sure you're not in the middle of a claim
Our dedicated Pre-existing policy is limited to £1,500 of cover for pre-existing conditions as part of your overall vet fee limit. You may have more cover than this in your existing policy. You may not get cover from us if you're currently in the middle of a claim with another insurer. We only cover conditions without signs, symptoms, treatment, medication or advice for three months on our dedicated pre-existing policy or 2 years on our standard cover.

2. Cancel your existing policy

You'll need to tell your insurer if you want to cancel mid-policy. Some may require you to cancel your Direct Debit, pay any remaining premium and charge you a cancellation fee.

Switching pet insurance questions, answered

Everything else you may want to know about switching pet insurance to ManyPets.

Can I switch pet insurers mid-policy?

Yes, you can. But typically you’ll need to pay a fee for this, and sometimes you’ll need to pay any remaining premiums too.

You need to speak to your existing insurer if you cancel.

What should I consider before switching pet insurance?

Generally, make sure the pet insurance you and your pet are switching to is right for you. We don’t want to see you end up with something that doesn’t work for your circumstances.

We’d recommend looking out for things like:

  • What’s covered

  • Cost of pet insurance

  • Benefits and features, like 24/7 vet advice

  • Waiting period, which is how long your pet won’t be covered between policies

  • Exclusions, like behavioural treatment

  • Additional fees

How do I cancel my old pet insurance when I switch?

A lot of this depends on your current insurer. Most will need the policyholder to contact them.

Most are through the phone, but others, like us, will allow you to cancel online. Others will let you cancel over email.

You must let your current insurer know.

Do I have to stay with the same pet insurer?

No, but you should check with your current provider about any cancellation fees or premiums due. Once with ManyPets you can cancel at any time with no fees.

Will the pet insurance start immediately?

It depends. Usually, there's a 14-day waiting period between the time you switch from an old insurer to us.

But you won't have a waiting period if you've been with another insurer for 12 consecutive months (excluding bilateral conditions and pregnancy).
