Why's pet insurance important?

Cats and dogs are our therapists, personal trainers part of the family. But there's no NHS to look after them when they're ill or injured.

That's where pet insurance comes in.

The right cover gives you peace of mind that you'll be able to get them the treatment they need by paying for sudden or unexpected vet bills.

Dr Kirsten Rongrenn

What vets really think about pet insurance

Hearing the words ‘they’re insured’ from a pet owner is such a relief to us as vets. It means we both know that the cost of treatment becomes a less significant factor in major medical decision making. Our choices get to be made primarily on what we all agree is best for the pet.
Dr Kirsten Ronngren, ManyPets veterinary surgeon

What does pet insurance cover?

Pet insurance can help pay for unexpected vet bills.

It can cover the cost of:

  • Vet consultations and examinations (although not routine ones like your annual check-up)

  • Medication

  • Surgery

  • Diagnostic blood, urine and stool tests

  • Diagnostic scans, like X-rays, MRIs and CT scans

What else can pet insurance cover?

Pet insurance can cover more than just veterinary treatment:

  • Missing pet – Help with the cost of finding a lost or stolen pet is included as standard with our Complete policy. You can add this as an option to our other policies.

  • Third party liability (dogs only) – All our policies include cover for someone taking legal action against you and your dog.

  • Overseas travel – You can add cover for vet fees while you’re travelling abroad with your pet as an option with some of our policies. It’s included as standard on our Complete policy.

  • Cattery and kennel fees – All our policies have some cover for looking after your pet if you have an unplanned hospital stay.

ManyPets also covers your pet for some things that other providers often don’t:

  • Pre-existing conditions – It’s rare that pet insurance covers medical conditions that your pet’s suffered from before you took out the policy. All our policies cover conditions that ended two or more years ago. We also have a Pre-existing policy with some cover for more recent conditions.

  • Dental treatment – Most pet insurance policies don’t cover dental illness. Our Complete policy covers dental accidents and illnesses as long as your pet’s had a dental check-up in the past 12 months and you follow any vet-recommended treatment within six months. All our other policies cover dental accidents.

  • Complementary therapies – If your vet recommends your pet need complementary therapies like hydrotherapy, not all pet insurance providers will cover it. ManyPets policies include complementary cover within your vet fee limit. The level of cover will depend on which policy you choose, it ranges from £500 to £2,500.

  • Behavioural treatment – We’ll cover behavioural treatment when needed as a result of illness or injury when referred by your vet.

  • Emergency vet care – Most pet insurance covers out of hours vet fees if your pet needs it. But some providers have limits and exclusions around how they’ll cover them.
We’ll cover any necessary out of hours treatment up to your vet fee limit unless your vet advises that your pet can wait.
You can also make a free video call to a qualified vet at any time of day or night if you’re not sure if your pet needs an emergency vet trip.

  • Pregnancy – Pet insurance doesn’t usually cover pregnancy complications, but some of our policies will cover them in a first pregnancy only.

We'll go the extra mile for your pets

That's why we cover what some other providers don’t.

What isn’t covered by pet insurance?

Pet insurance is for the unexpected – so it can’t cover you for the cost of routine vet trips like:

How our pet insurance compares

It can be quite hard to compare pet insurance. We believe we can offer unique cover that other providers don’t, so here’s how we measure up:

What makes the best pet insurance?

With pet insurance, the cheapest policy isn’t necessarily the best.

Top-level policies will cost a bit more but will give you greater peace of mind that your pet will be really well looked after if they're injured or unwell.

The most comprehensive pet insurance policies should offer:

  • A very high level of vet fee cover

  • Dental cover for illnesses, as well as accidents

  • Behavioural treatment

  • Complementary therapies

  • Cover to help find your pet if they're lost or stolen

  • Third party liability cover for dogs as standard

  • Cover while you travel abroad with your pet

Our Complete policy has all this and more:

  • £15,000 vet fee cover

  • Dental cover for accidents and illnesses up to your vet fee limit

  • Cover for behavioural treatment when needed as a result of illness or injury when referred by your vet

  • Complementary treatments covered up to £2,500 within your £15,000 vet fee limit

  • Third party liability for dogs

  • £2.500 cover for travelling abroad

These are all standard with Complete – you won't be charged for any of these as optional extras.

This is what I call excellent customer service

Quick and easy to make a claim. Claim paid the following day. Exceptional service. Very happy customer and cats.

Types of pet insurance

One of the most confusing things about pet insurance is that there are four main types:

  1. Accident only – Only covers accidents like broken bones or eating something harmful. These policies won’t cover any illnesses so although they’re the cheapest, they’re very limited.

  2. Time-limited – Covers each condition for 12 months. After that the condition won’t be covered and you’ll have to pay for any more treatment yourself.

  3. Maximum benefit – Sometimes called ‘per condition’. You’ll have a certain amount of cover for each condition your pet has. Once you reach the limit, you’ll have to pay for any more treatment for that condition yourself.

  4. Lifetime – There’s an annual vet fee limit that refreshes each year when you renew. As long as you keep renewing your policy, you’ll have cover up to that limit each year.

We only offer lifetime pet insurance policies.

It’s because we don't want your cover to run out while your pet still needs it.

Our lifetime policies have an annual vet fee limit that refreshes each time you renew your policy – it's the best type of cover for ongoing or chronic health conditions that develop while you have the policy.

Six ways to cut the cost of pet insurance

No one wants to pay more than they should.

Here’s a few ways to save money on your pet insurance:

  • Choose the right level of cover – our Complete policy is one of the most comprehensive in the UK but we have other options for pet parents with different budgets
  • Increase your excess or co-payment – choosing a higher excess or co-payment will make premiums cheaper.
  • Only choose a level of excess you can afford to pay.
  • Use our video vet service – you could avoid a vet trip if you can get the advice you need from a 24/7 video vet consultation
  • Keep them healthy – regular check-ups and a healthy weight could mean fewer vet trips
  • Multi-pet insurance – up to 15% discount for pets on the same policy
  • Consider MoneyBack – our option pays 20% of your premium back if you don’t need to claim

Frequently asked questions

We answer the most common questions about pet insurance.

How much cover do I need?

When you chose a policy, think about how much you’d be able to pay yourself if your cat or dog needed expensive treatment like surgery.

According to the ABI, the average pet insurance claim in 2021 was £848. But hip replacement surgery for a puppy with hip dysplasia could cost over £13,000, while treating soft tissue sarcoma in a cat could be £12,200.

Our research shows that cruciate ligament repair for a dog could be £4,000+ and even several repeat appointments for vomiting and diarrhoea could quickly add up to hundreds of pounds.

Our Complete policy has a £15,000 annual vet fee limit. That’s high enough to cover many expensive surgeries and chronic conditions. It’s one of the most comprehensive in the UK but we have other options with lower levels of cover as well.

Is pet insurance mandatory in the UK?

Pet insurance isn’t compulsory in the UK and you don’t legally have to have it. But it can give you peace of mind that you can pay expensive vet bills and get your cat or dog back to health.

What is Bought By Many?

ManyPets used to be called Bought By Many. We changed our name in 2022 because pets are all we do now.

Can I have more than one pet insurance policy?

Some policies have terms that state they might not pay a claim if you have more than one policy. If you’re considering overlapping policies when switching providers you don’t have to do that when you move to our cover. If you switch straight from another provider with no gap in cover there is no waiting period for claims.

What is the excess?

The excess is the amount of the claim you cover and it’s usually deducted from the payout for your claim. If your pet is under nine we offer a choice of excess and even have a no-excess option on our Regular policies. Unlike many other insurance providers we only take an excess once a policy year rather than on every claim. The excess helps keep the cost of your premium down.

Will it affect my price if my pet is spayed or neutered?

Yes, whether your pet is neutered or spayed is one of the factors we and many pet insurance providers use to decide your price.

Is pet insurance worth it for older dogs?

Dogs are more likely to need vet treatment as they get older and pet insurance can cover some of those costs. Not all providers cover older dogs but we have policies that can cover pets of any age and will pay for conditions that ended at least two years ago.

If you choose lifetime insurance while your dog is young it means conditions it develops will continue to be covered each year you renew.
