Pet insurance for older dogs
Older dog, same cover
Care for them through their golden years with our dog insurance policies.Pet insurance for older dogs
Just when your dog reaches an age where they need pet insurance more than ever, all of a sudden it can be trickier to come by. Many insurers sadly won’t cover older dogs because they know they’re more likely to need medical care. But we don’t think that’s fair.
At ManyPets, we love pets of all ages, so there’s no upper age limit on our dog insurance. We offer up to £15,000 of lifetime cover for all dogs and we’ll also cover pre-existing conditions that haven’t needed treatment, medication or advice for two years.
There’s just a couple of things to bear in mind. When your dog turns nine, you’ll need to pay a compulsory excess of £99, plus 20% of any claim amount after you’ve paid your excess (called a co-payment). That’s so we can keep everyone’s premium prices more affordable.
When is a dog considered old?
Well, it depends. Although your dog may still bounce around like a pup, dogs can generally be classed as senior canine citizens when they reach the ripe old age of 7 or 8. It’s a little higher for smaller breeds, who on average have longer lifespans, and can be slightly less for giant breeds who age more quickly.
But whenever it is that your older dog starts taking life at a slower pace, you'll find a policy that suits you both at ManyPets.

Older dogs with health conditions
Just like humans, it’s more likely your dog will have health problems as they age. And as many insurers exclude pre-existing conditions from their cover, this can make it even trickier to find the right insurance.
We don’t think that’s right. That’s why all of our policies cover conditions that have been free from treatment, advice or medication for two years.
But what if your older dog has a more recent problem? Well, that’s where you can turn to our Pre-existing policy. It provides cover for dogs who’ve had a condition within the last two years, as long as they’ve been free from treatment, medication or advice for that issue for three months.
Cover for teeth? That’s dental!
Dental health can be a real problem for older dogs, as they’re more likely to experience issues as they get older. Our Complete policy includes insurance for dental illness, as long as your dog’s had a dental check-up within the last twelve months, and you’ve followed any dental treatment recommended by a vet within six months. All of our policies include cover for dental accidents.

All the questions you’ve ever wanted to ask about older dog insurance.
How much is pet insurance for older dogs?
In the UK, the cost of insuring dog of any age can depend on:
Your pet's breed
Their age
Where you live
Any pre-existing conditions they have
The policy you choose
It’s important to note that pet insurance for older dogs is usually more expensive than it is for younger pets. That's because older dogs are much more likely to need vet treatment at some point.
If you take out a policy with us after your pet's 9th birthday, you'll need to pay a compulsory excess of £99 and a 20% co-payment of each claim. If you join before your pet's 9th birthday, their excess will be a minimum of £69 (unless you chose a higher excess), plus 20% co-payment of each claim.
The best way to find out exactly how much it’ll cost to insure your dog is to get a quote – it only takes a few moments.
Why is pet insurance for older dogs more expensive?
Pet insurance for older dogs is nearly always more expensive than it is for younger pets. That's because, like humans, dogs are much more likely to need medical care as they age. Insurers will expect you to claim more, so this is reflected in their prices.
Does dog insurance cover euthanasia?
For older dogs over the age of nine, your policy won’t include cover for the vet fees associated with putting your pet to sleep, burial or cremation due to illness.
However, If your dog is under the age of nine, then this Farewell Cover is included as standard for accidents and illness on all of our policies.
What if my older dog has existing medical conditions?
If your older dog has had a health issue within the last two years that has needed vet advice, treatment or medication, our Pre-existing policy may be right for you.
It will cover more recent conditions, as long as your dog has been free from signs, symptoms, treatment, medication or advice for three months before the policy starts.
We’ll give you up to £1500 of vet fee cover for the pre-existing condition within a wider vet fee limit of £7000, which can be used for new conditions.
Find out more about our Pre-existing policy here.
Is pet insurance for older dogs worth it?
Older dogs are more likely to need vet care, especially if they’ve developed a condition that requires on-going treatment.
Although this fact makes pet insurance for older dogs more expensive, having cover can give you peace of mind, and may save you paying out for costly, unexpected vet bills.
Is dental cover included in my older dog insurance?
Dental accident and illness cover is included on our Complete policy, as long as your older dog’s had a dental check-up within the last twelve months, and you’ve followed any dental treatment recommended by a vet within six months.
All of our other policies include cover for dental accidents only.
